Election Success For Local Lib Dems

June 27, 2002 12:00 AM

Lib Dem John Hughes has won a stunning victory in the Park Ward by-election. Despite a massive effort by the Conservatives, the Lib Dem share of the vote rose by 15%.

John said, "I would like to thank local people for the support they have given me. I pledge to do my best as a local Councillor to improve the quality of life for local people."

Stunning Victory

Lib Dem Peter Carroll was delighted with the result saying, "John Hughes will make an excellent Councillor for the people of Park Ward. I look forward to working with John over the coming years to get the best for local residents."

In the two local by-elections held in since the General Election, the Lib Dem vote has rocketed. In the recent Hythe by-election, the Lib Dems gained the seat from the Tories by a large margin. Labour finished in a poor third place.

Peter Carroll commented, "The Lib Dems have continued to make progress since the General Election, while support for Labour has plummeted! More and more people are turning to the Liberal Democrats as the only party who can change our area for the better."

The Result -

John Hughes Lib Dem 1003 (58%)

Con 653 (38%)

Lab 65 (4%)

There was a swing of 10% from the Tories to the Lib Dems. A similar swing at the next election would result in a Lib Dem MP for Folkestone.

1999 Result

Lib Dem 595 (43%)

Con 595 (43%)

Lab 179 (14%)
