Council Has Failed Local People

December 5, 2002 12:00 AM

Over £1 million of cuts to local services will be made by the Conservative Council next year. Key services are expected to be hit badly, as Conservative Councillors try to make up the shortfalls in next year's budget.

Lib Dem Council Group Leader Linda Cufley commented, "These cuts are a result of huge incompetence by the ruling Conservatives. They had been warned several times that their budget did not add up, but they just refused to listen. Now our Council finances are in a terrible mess."

Since taking control of Shepway Council, the Conservatives have allowed services to decline across Shepway. This is despite Council Tax rises of around 9% a year.

Where Will The Cuts Come?

Key services like street cleaning and regeneration schemes are likely to face the axe. Already, 40% of the money earmarked for regeneration of the Old High Street in Folkestone has been diverted away. Resources to encourage tourism and to bring fresh investment to our area are also likely to be reduced drastically.

Lib Dem Councillor John Hughes said, "Residents of Romney Marsh, Hythe, Folkestone and local villages who feel that their area has been neglected are likely to see things get even worse next year. The Council has let down local people and voters will be looking forward to giving their verdict in May's elections."
