Peter Carroll is fighting to save local services

Local Lib Dem campaigner Peter Carroll has joined the fight to save Shepway services from closure. The Labour Government has already forced the Council to make cuts to Public Toilets, tourism funding, the Airshow, and grass verge cutting.

Peter Carroll has written to Local Government Minister Nick Raynsford to ask for extra help for Shepway Council and also not to force further cuts on local people. Mr Carroll has also enlisted the help of Lib Dem shadow Local Government team of MPs at Westminster to help lobby the Government on this issue.

Peter Carroll said, "If the Government insists on more cuts to spending in Shepway, it will affect thousands of local residents. I have asked Mr Raynsford to look again at the amount of funding Shepway receives from the Government. Shepway residents pay their fair share of national taxes - now it is simply a case of our fighting for our fair share of national grant."

Further cuts to local spending could mean the closure of services like Hythe Swimming Pool, One Stop Shops, CCTV and the planned recycling improvements would also be threatened. Mr Carroll added, "The fate of vital local services is in the Government's hands. I have told the minister exactly what these cuts would mean to local people. Our local services must be protected."
