Toilets to Re-open

May 4, 2004 5:20 PM

Council listens to local people on public toilets

Public toilets across Shepway are to re-open after a vote by Lib Dem Councillors. The closure of the district's public toilets was forced on the Council by the Labour Government. Now these cuts will be reversed and the Council will work to find savings elsewhere in the budget.

Lib Dem Leader Cllr Linda Cufley said, "We never wanted to close the toilets, but the Government forced the Council into making cuts. We have now listened to residents and the toilets will be re-opened as quickly as possible."

Anger at interference

Many local people are angry at the way the Labour Government has treated Shepway.

Cllr Linda Cufley said, "We had a budget that would have kept local services including the toilets open. It was the Government that forced the changes that meant the toilets were closed. It is a disgraceful situation."

Residents to decide

Lib Dem Councillors have announced that they are to launch a large consultation of residents.

Cllr Terry Preston explained, "We will be asking every resident which services matter most to them including public toilets. It is important that local people are consulted on big issues like service provision in our area."
