Big Health Problems Being Stored Up for the Future

Commenting on the survey of smoking, drinking and drug use among young people in England in 2004, published by the Department of Health today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Steve Webb MP said:
"These figures show big health problems are being stored up for the future.
"Nearly one in 10 young teenagers are regular smokers. As girls are smoking more than boys there is scope for more creativity in targeting health messages at young girls.
"On average young people today are now drinking double the number of alcoholic units they did in 1990. This is further evidence of the Government's failure to tackle the binge drinking culture in this country.
"Parents need to take some responsibility for their children's health and safety. Young people often end up drinking because there is nothing for them to do in the evenings and the weekends.
"The Government should use the opportunity presented by the 2012 Olympics to inspire young people. Sports based projects, using sporting celebrities as good role models could help children live healthier lives."
