Kent Police Authority introduces victims' code

Kent Police Authority is pledging to keep victims of crime informed throughout their case by introducing a new code of practice from Monday 3 April.

Known as the Victims' code it will make sure people are made aware of developments in their case from the initial crime report right through to prosecution.

During an investigation police will stay in regular contact with a victim to give them more information including news of any arrest, charge or granting of bail. People who choose to take part in the scheme can opt to be updated by email, letter, or by phone.

The scheme, a Home Office initiative, was piloted at West Kent and will now be introduced countywide. One woman who took part in the pilot said: "I feel that this is a good step forward to support victims like myself and create a support network from the beginning of a crime to the end. It will certainly reassure victims that they are not alone."

Ann Barnes, Chair of Kent Police Authority: "As a magistrate I understand the difficulties and frustrations sometimes faced by people who are victims of crime. The new code will help people understand what is happening during their investigation and what's likely to happen next.

"The victims' code is part of our ongoing work to create a more accessible and responsive police service. We believe it will help to build on public confidence and hopefully more people will follow the progress of their case through to prosecution."
