With Regret: David Callahan leaves Lib Dems to become Independent

January 16, 2007 5:23 PM

David CallahanNorth Downs East Councillor David Callahan has resigned the Liberal Democrat group on Shepway District Council. Councillor Callahan has announced that he intends to sit as an independent councillor in future.

Shepway Lib Dem Group leader Lynne Beaumont has expressed her sadness at the news. Lynne said:

"I would like to thank David for all the hard work that he has put in over the last three and a half years. I was saddened by this news, which appears to be because of some frustrations with the decision making processes within the council chamber.

"I understand his frustration, and I am sorry that he has taken this course of action, and we all wish him well in the future."

Shepway Liberal Democrat Chair Tim Prater added his regret on behalf of the Party. Tim said:

"This has been a difficult decision for David. It's clear for some time that he has found his position on the Council difficult, and his choice to leave the group is one he has made after a great deal of consideration. We respect David's contribution to the council, and as a Councillor, and will miss him in the Party."
