Mayor Peter Gane & Deputy Mayor Emily Sanger
Cheriton Councillor Peter Gane was elected as the new Mayor of Folkestone and Harbour Councillor Emily Sanger as the new Deputy Mayor of Folkestone for the year 2007-2008 at the Annual General Meeting of the Council on Friday 18 May.
The Liberal Democrats took control of Folkestone Town Council at the elections on 3rd May winning 11 of the 18 seats. The election saw a number of new faces elected to the council, with the Lib Dem Dhan Gurung making history as the first ex-Gurkha Councillor in the Country having been elected to represent Cheriton ward.
Liberal Democrat Town Council Group Leader Tim Prater welcomed Peter and Emily as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, saying:
"Peter has given 20 years of service to Folkestone as a Cheriton Councillor, and has served on Folkestone Town Council since its start in 2004. His commitment to Folkestone and his ward is second to none, and he will make an excellent Mayor - as he has done in the past. As a Cheriton ward colleague, Peter has been invaluable since I was first elected, and is massively well known and respected across Cheriton and the Town of Folkestone as a hardworking and dedicated Councillor.
"Emily will be a breath of fresh air as Deputy Mayor - possibly one of the youngest people to have held that position in the Country. First elected to the Town Council for Harbour in 2005, she has already made a real difference to her ward, working with Tessa Caruana and the team. Now elected with Sue Wallace, with great support - not least her daughter Chani who I suggest is a hot bet for future elections herself - Emily will be a real credit to Folkestone and Harbour as Deputy Mayor."
