Bin Boost for Folkestone

July 27, 2007 5:31 PM

Folkestone Town Council has taken the lead on getting street litter bins repainted in Folkestone. A motion proposed by Councillor Emily Sanger for the lead Lib Dem group and backed by the full Council last week has agreed funding of £3,000 for a project to repaint around 50 bins, concentrating on Folkestone Town Centre and bins on main roads.

The litter bins are owned and should be maintained by Shepway District Council, but many are in a poor state of decoration, and Shepway have no budget to fund repainting. Subject to agreeing certain conditions, Shepway Cabinet member for the Environment Rory Love has agreed that Folkestone can step in and get the bins painted.

Folkestone Town Councillor and Finance Committee Chair Tim Prater said:

"Folkestone has waited long enough - many of these street bins are a real eye-sore, and drag the whole look of the town down. By getting them painted, it should give a real boost to the look of the town.

"I'm pleased with the co-operation we have received from Shepway Cabinet member Rory Love: at our recent Town and District Council Partnership meeting, he praised the scheme as a good one for Folkestone. Although these bins are actually Shepway's responsibility, Folkestone Town Council will work in partnership with Shepway to make our town look its best.

"The project we've agreed will hopefully just be a start: there are many areas to tackle, and many bins need repainting. If this work is successfully, I hope we will see much more of it in the future!"
