Cheriton Tesco: Planning Application Expected for Large Expansion

The Herald have revealed that Tesco are planning to submit a planning application this Autumn to massively increase the Cheriton store.
Proposals include adding a new parking deck above the existing car park, a new glass front to the building to modernise the look and make better use of natural light to reduce electricity use, and an expansion of the sales area.
In a briefing to Folkestone Town Councillors in July, Tesco's discussed the proposed expansion of the store from 6,500 sq m with 401 car parking spaces to 10,200 sq m with 633 parking spaces. Councillors, including Cheriton Councillors Peter Gane and Tim Prater, raised questions on the development, including on building noise, the visual impact, and the likely effect on local roads.
Tesco's have pledged to consult local residents before submitting the planning application, with an in-store display and public meeting in the Cheriton area, probably during September.
After the consultations, Tesco's would then have to submit a full planning application to Shepway District Council. At this stage, all interested parties - including Folkestone Town Council and local residents - can formally respond to the proposals while the application is considered.
