Lib Dems ICM Poll Surge Against Both Labour and Tories

November 24, 2007 4:59 PM

Ld Poll BoostAn ICM poll in the Guardian newspaper today has shown the Liberal Democrats surging in the polls and both Labour and Conservatives slipping back. The Lib Dems also seized Council seats from the Conservatives in local by-elections in Suffolk and Wales.

The poll showed Labour on just 31%, down 4% from last month - their lowest ICM rating since Gordon Brown took over from Tony Blair in June. The Conservatives polled 37%, also down 3%.

The big winners were the Liberal Democrats, whose support rose 3% to 23%. The Lib Dems also took two council seats from the Tories this week in by-elections in Forest Heath, Suffolk, and Conwy, North Wales.

The poll was conducted after it was revealed 25 million people's personal data had been compromised after computer discs containing child benefit records went missing.

The Guardian comments that the results "contain warnings for the Conservatives too, suggesting they have failed to take advantage of Brown's most recent woes, that voters are yet to be convinced by David Cameron and that there remains a powerful anti-Tory majority among the electorate".
