Chilham Road Residents Meeting with Commercial Concerns

Commercial Concerns Ltd have arranged a meeting in All Soul's Church Hall at 6.45pm on Monday 21st April 2008 to discuss the potential redevelopment of Chilham Road, Cheriton. All interested residents are encouraged to attend.
Commercial Concerns, who own the site of the old White Lion pub, have recently written to residents in Chilham Road outlining a potential scheme to redevelop all of Chilham Road as a new-build, seeking a scheme that would deliver 80 new apartments, 16 3-storey houses with gardens and integral garages, a children's play area approximately 150 metres long within the curtilidge of the existing park and an underground car park with around 160 spaces.
Shepway District Council have confirmed that no planning permission for the above scheme has been given or even submitted. The developer can make the proposal, but cannot compel any local resident to sell their house if they do not wish to do so.
Cheriton Councillor Tim Prater has been working to keep local residents up to date, and has talked to Shepway Council Planning Department about the proposed development. He said:
"At a meeting late last year, the developer of the White Lion site met with a number of local residents to discuss his plans for the area, for which he has received planning permission for student accommodation plus 4 new houses in Chilham Road. Residents made clear their worries on the development making parking worse amongst other issues, and the developer promised to go and look at his plans again and see if there was a way to alleviate the parking issues locally.
"He has now come back with some very substantial new proposals to put to local residents that would dramatically change the street. Essentially, he has a vision that could lead to the complete rebuilding of the entire road. These ideas are his own and that they could only become a reality if all the residents agreed.
"I look forward to hearing local residents views at the meeting on Monday, and will work to support them."
