M20 Junction 11-12 Widening Works Prepare for Operation Stack Moveable Barrier

May 13, 2008 10:01 AM
Operation Stack

Operation Stack in Action

Works were due to start on the M20 on 6th May in both directions between junction 11 & 12 (Hythe to Folkestone) and are expected to last 13 weeks. The works are being carried out to allow for a moveable barrier machine to be used for the implementation of Phase 1 of Operation Stack.

The coast-bound entry slip for junction 11 will be widened and the London-bound carriageway will be widened from two to three lanes from junction 12 to 11a. The entry slip roads on the London bound carriageway at junction 12 and 11a will also be revised to take account of the additional carriageway lane.

The works will be carried out 24/7 with at least two lanes running at all times and hard shoulder running where necessary. There will be some overnight closures between 8pm and 6am of the entry and exit sip roads at J 11 & 12. Only one closure should be in place per night and all affected traffic will follow fully signed diversion works. A 50mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works.

Once the works are completed a machine that works by lifting a line of concrete barriers into place as it drives along the road will be used for the implementation of Phase 1 of Operation Stack.

To contact the Highways Agency with any question about these works, call their Customer care line on 0845 6000414.
