Sandgate Town Meeting Force Referendum on Parish / Town Question

May 14, 2008 4:11 PM

Well over 100 Sandgate residents attended the Sandgate Town Meeting at Sandgate Library on Tuesday evening to call for a referendum on changing Sandgate back from a "Town" administration to a "Parish" one. The referendum was agreed after a huge vote in support at the meeting.

The referendum has been called after Sandgate Council, led by controversial Mayor Geoffrey Boot, forced through the change in status at a recent Council meeting. Many local residents are furious about the change, and at the recent Sandgate Valley by-election, anti-Town campaigner Lib Dem Season Prater secured a massive 58% of the vote.

New Councillor Season Prater was at the town meeting, and supported the referendum call. She said:

"It's sad that the Mayor refused to allow this decision to be put back to a vote of the Council, but I'm delighted that people power has forced a referendum so people can express their view.

"I shall be voting and campaigning for a change back to Parish status, and I know lots of other local residents who will be doing the same."
