Challenging Immigration Detention and Surviving Post-release Destitution

A free training day organised by Kent Refugee Help on Saturday 27th September from 11 am - 4 pm. The programme will focus on release on bail from immigration detention, the role of sureties in the immigration courts and ongoing support once people are released from detention.

Venue: The Friends Meeting House, 6 The Friars, Canterbury, CT1 2AS

Refreshments: lunch provided (there will be a collection to cover costs)

  • 11.00 Welcome
  • 11.05 Session led by John Bingham, Senior Case Worker, Bail for Immigration Detainees. How the AIT (Asylum and Immigration Tribunal) bail works; bail hearings by video link; going to court and being a surety; how the judge decides whether or not to grant bail; some examples. Questions.
  • 12.00 Peter Keenan and Magid Maneshi talk about their experiences in the Bail Court and answer questions
  • 12.30 Lunch
  • 1.30 Chair: Edward Barns, Hackney Migrant Support Group
  • 1.35 - 2.45 Chaired by Eddie Barnes, Migrant Support. Experiencing post-release destitution; accessing the limited support available. The criteria for different forms of NASS support. Asylum Support Appeals Project; TUC's Campaign on the Right to Work. Questions.
  • 2.45 - 3.30 Small Group work with ex-detainees;* detainees can be asked about their experiences of detention, of health care, of going for bail; about bail hearings; about post-release accommodation; about where they have found help; their solicitors etc.
  • 3.30 Plenary - Review of the Day and further questions.
