Matthews: Cracks start to widen at Hythe Town Council

October 31, 2008 10:35 AM

Neil Matthews has questioned the lack of attendance by Councillors at the most recent Hythe Town Council meeting on Thursday, where HALF the Councillors were absent, and very limited discussion at the meeting.

Neil Matthews, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Folkestone and Hythe, commented:

"Goodness knows what is happening on this Council, there seemed to be a complete breakdown of communication. Confusion reined when Councillor Alec Mayne didn't know how to vote, and so sought guidance from the Mayor.

"With only half of Hythe's Councillors bothering to show up, complacency is really taking hold. And of course, it was of no surprise apologies were accepted by the Mayor and Council for the absence of Cllrs Mr & Mrs Oliver; its nearly a year since they left the area for Bath."

Neil added:

"Of course its good to see Hythe have the honour of the Cinque Ports Speakership this year, but if Councillors only turn up for the fun parts and don't bother to for working meetings such as this Full Council meeting, people are going to draw their own conclusions as why these people wanted to be Councillors in the first place."
