County Councillor gets action on Weymouth Road safety

July 16, 2009 5:50 PM

Cheriton and Folkestone West Councillor Tim Prater has received a promise from Kent County Council to deal with road safety problems at the junction of Weymouth Road and Langdon Road in Cheriton. The pledge comes after Tim Prater raised problem parking at the site with Kent Highways after being approached by a local resident.

Kent Highways have now told new Lib Dem County Councillor Tim:

"Unrestricted parking on both sides of Weymouth Road is restricting visibility for drivers exiting Langdon Road and is causing traffic flow difficulties on Weymouth Road. This situation is exacerbated by a slight change in direction of Weymouth Road at this location, and drivers parking too close to the junction.

"A solution to this would be the provision of corner protection parking restrictions on the west side of Langdon Road, extending 10m to the north of the junction and south of the junction extending to the existing bus stop clearway. These would ensure visibility for vehicles exiting Langdon Road and provide adequate width on Weymouth Road for two running lanes as well as maintaining parking on the east side.

"It is considered that the above measures are necessary and would benefit highway users in this location. The above measures will require a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). TRO's are subject to a set procedure, part of which allows for objections from the public. If there are a large number of objections the scheme will be reported to the Shepway Joint Transport Board for approval. As such, the outcome cannot be guaranteed."

Tim Prater commented:

"I'm pleased that Kent have taken this forward, and want local residents to have their say on the proposals when they are published by Kent."
