Highways Agency Update: A20 Dover - closures for resurfacing

September 1, 2010 9:34 AM

The A20 is to be resurfaced at various locations around Dover to help improve the safety of the road surface and to help to keep the road in good condition for the future.

The resurfacing work will begin on Wednesday 01 September in Lord Warden Square, off the A20. From Monday 06 September 2010 the work will move to the A20. Sections of the A20 will be closed during this work with clearly signed diversions in place.

The work is being carried out in phases:

Phase 1 - Lord Warden Square

Phase 1 will take place at Lord Warden Square from Wednesday 01 September to Saturday 04 September. The road will be closed but there will be a diversion route in place for lorries to maintain access into the marina and the cruise terminal.

Phase 2 - Aycliffe coastbound and London-bound carriageways

Phase 2 will take place on the A20 coastbound and London-bound carriageways, immediately west of the Western Heights (Aycliffe) Roundabout, near Aycliffe, from Monday 06 September to Wednesday 08 September. This section of the A20 will be fully closed during the work with signed diversion routes in place.

Road users travelling coastbound will be directed off the A20 at the Courtwood Interchange, following the diversion along the B2011 Folkestone Road towards the Priory Road roundabout. The diversion then leads onto York Street to rejoin the A20 at the A256 York Street Roundabout, where drivers can continue with their journeys.

Road users travelling London-bound will follow the same diversion route in the opposite direction.

Phase 3 - Courtwood Interchange coastbound entry and exit slip roads

Phase 3 will take place at the Courtwood Interchange coastbound entry and exit slip roads, near Capel, from Wednesday 08 September until Saturday 11 September. There will be a full slip road closure with signed diversion routes in place. There will also be a lane closure on the A20 with a 50mph speed limit in place.

Road users wanting to exit the A20 coastbound at this interchange will be diverted along the A20 to the Western Heights Roundabout. At the roundabout traffic will go all the way round, joining the A20 London-bound. They will then exit the A20 via the London-bound exit slip road at the Courtwood Interchange where the diversion will end. Road users wanting to join the A20 coastbound will be diverted along the A20 London-bound to the Alkham Valley junction, where they will rejoin the A20 coastbound to continue with their journeys.

Phase 4 - Alkham Valley London-bound entry slip road

Phase 4 will take place at the Alkham Valley London-bound entry slip road and on the main carriageway, from Monday 13 September until Sunday 19 September. There will be a full slip road and carriageway closure with signed diversion routes in place. There will also be a 50mph speed limit in place.

Road users wanting to use the A20 London-bound carriageway will be diverted off the A20 London-bound at the Alkham Valley junction, follow the A260 towards Folkestone, and then join the A259, heading west, before rejoining the M20 at junction 13.

Road users wanting to join using the London-bound entry slip road will use the same diversion route as above.

Phase 5 - Alkham Valley coastbound entry slip road

Phase 5 will take place at the Alkham Valley coastbound entry slip road, from Wednesday 15 September until Sunday 19 September. There will be a full slip road closure, with a signed diversion route in place. There will also be a 50mph speed limit in place.

Road users wanting to join the A20 coastbound at this junction will be diverted along the A260 towards Folkestone, to then join the A259, heading west, and then the M20 at junction 13. There they will rejoin the A20 coastbound to continue with their journeys.
