Shepway Council have launched a consultation on a proposal to store high-level nuclear waste in a massive storage facility on the Romney Marsh in Shepway.
Shepway Liberal Democrats have slammed the proposals as "irresponsible, outrageous and madness". Folkestone and Hythe MP Damian Collins and Kent County Council Leader Paul Carter have also both denounced the idea.
Greenpeace say that "current proposals for dealing with highly radioactive nuclear waste involve burying it in deep underground sites. Whether the storage containers, the store itself, or the surrounding rocks will offer enough protection to stop radioactivity from escaping in the long term is impossible to predict."
If this proposal goes to the next phase there will be years of uncertainty and a massive negative impact on the local economy as surveys and new consultations take place to consider the suitablility of the area.
Don't let it happen in Shepway. Sign the petiton below to register YOUR voice against these proposals. All signatures will be handed in to the Chief Executive of Shepway District Council by 19th July as a part of the Council's Consulation Process.
I do NOT wish Shepway Council to submit an expression of interest in hosting a Nuclear Disposal and Research Facility. Shepway Council should end this process now.
Thank you for your interest but we are no longer accepting signatures for this petition.
