About Lynne Beaumont

Lynne Beaumont was the Liberal Democrats' candidate for Folkestone and Hythe for the 2015 General Election.

Lynne Beaumont and Danny AlexanderLynne has lived, worked and campaigned here for 30 years. She has lived in Folkestone, Hythe and the Elham Valley and raised her children here, and is delighted that her grandchildren are also now growing up here.

Lynne has been a Councillor in Shepway for over 10 years, and a School Governor for 12 years before that. Lynne fought and won by-elections to return to Shepway District Council and Folkestone Town Council in November 2012, overturning large Conservative majorities to take the seats.

A nationally renowned campaigner, Lynne helped lead the FairerFuelUK campaign against rises in fuel duty costs and has been a key part of the Gurkha justice campaign since its inception.

Lynne believes that our next MP should be dedicated to our area full time. Fighting for local services. Working with local people and local councils to deliver for the area. Standing up for what local people want - not blindly following a Party line.

Lynne Beaumont with Folkestone and Hythe MP recognition surveyPopular Local Campaigner Lynne stood for the Liberal Democrats in Folkestone and Hythe in the 2010 General Election, coming a very clear second to the Conservatives, miles ahead of Labour, the Green Party and UKIP. Lynne says:

"For the past 5 years, we have had an MP nobody seems to know. Surveys show 7 out of 10 residents do not even recognise him!

"I have spoken to so many people who ask me 'where is our MP?'. Even the local press call him 'Desperate Damo'.

"Voting Tory means you will get more of the same from your absent, quiet MP, and for most people, that's nothing."

The Liberal Democrats have called on Folkestone and Hythe MP Damian Collins to ensure thousands EU nationals living in Kent are guaranteed the right to remain in Britain, as figures have revealed the extent to which local NHS services rely on EU nationals.

The news comes after the government was defeated in a historic vote in the House of Lords this week, after peers voted for an amendment to guarantee the right of EU citizens to remain in the UK. The issue will now be voted on by MPs, as pressure mounts on the government to change position.

Despite residents, campaigners and councillors from Folkestone and Sandgate insisting that for the new Shorncliffe development to go ahead required a widened road bridge at Horn Street, Shepway Development Control decided... against making that a condition on the developer.

Instead of widening the bridge to allow east two-way running, there there will be traffic lights put on the bridge to enforce one-way running, and associated works to the approaches and creation of a junction to the new St Martins Plain and Stadium developments.
