About Lynne Beaumont

Lynne Beaumont was the Liberal Democrats' candidate for Folkestone and Hythe for the 2015 General Election.

Lynne Beaumont and Danny AlexanderLynne has lived, worked and campaigned here for 30 years. She has lived in Folkestone, Hythe and the Elham Valley and raised her children here, and is delighted that her grandchildren are also now growing up here.

Lynne has been a Councillor in Shepway for over 10 years, and a School Governor for 12 years before that. Lynne fought and won by-elections to return to Shepway District Council and Folkestone Town Council in November 2012, overturning large Conservative majorities to take the seats.

A nationally renowned campaigner, Lynne helped lead the FairerFuelUK campaign against rises in fuel duty costs and has been a key part of the Gurkha justice campaign since its inception.

Lynne believes that our next MP should be dedicated to our area full time. Fighting for local services. Working with local people and local councils to deliver for the area. Standing up for what local people want - not blindly following a Party line.

Lynne Beaumont with Folkestone and Hythe MP recognition surveyPopular Local Campaigner Lynne stood for the Liberal Democrats in Folkestone and Hythe in the 2010 General Election, coming a very clear second to the Conservatives, miles ahead of Labour, the Green Party and UKIP. Lynne says:

"For the past 5 years, we have had an MP nobody seems to know. Surveys show 7 out of 10 residents do not even recognise him!

"I have spoken to so many people who ask me 'where is our MP?'. Even the local press call him 'Desperate Damo'.

"Voting Tory means you will get more of the same from your absent, quiet MP, and for most people, that's nothing."

    Lynne Beaumont has thanked voters across Folkestone and Hythe for their support in the General Election. Locally Damian Collins retained the seat for the Conservatives and Labour were second, with Lynne Beaumont moving from 4th in 2015 to take 3rd this time around.

    Nationally the Conservatives lost their majority in a snap election called by Theresa May to increase her majority in a call that seems to have competely backfired, with calls for her resignation coming from within and outside her Party. Full results by consistituency are available here.

    We've got to stop the squeeze on our public services.

    Every week now, we're hearing more and more alarming news about our NHS, social care, schools and other key public services. They've been squeezed too far. If we don't act soon, they will collapse.

    I fear for the future of our NHS and schools if Theresa May's Conservatives are elected with a huge majority. Big majorities tend to lead to big mistakes. And those 'big mistakes' are likely to include choosing the most damaging form of Brexit, and allowing forces in her Party to crush our NHS, our schools and our other public services like local policing. Even people who are natural Conservatives don't want that.

    Lots of people in Folkestone & Hythe say:

    "It's so Tory here that we'll never beat them."

    BUT the Tory vote in the last three General Elections has been pretty constant at 26,000.

    • In 2015, more than 28,000 registered voters here chose not to vote;
    • In 2010, it was more than 24,000;
    • In 2005, it was nearly 22,000.

    The Liberal Democrats have announced an investment of an extra £6bn a year in our NHS & Social Care system.

    This new funding will be paid for through an immediate 1p rise on all rates of income tax. This funding will be ring-fenced to be spent only on the NHS and social care and will provide vital services with the money they desperately need until a longer-term solution can be found.

    Schools across Folkestone and Hythe are facing slashed funding over the next few years.

    The Conservatives' new funding formula for schools will take money from many of our local schools. Over the next few years, that means a loss to our local schools:

    • Folkestone Academy: -£1,435,809
    • Folkestone School for Girls: -£701,328
    • Brockhill Park PA College: -£562,403
    • The Harvey Grammar: -£405,206
    • The Marsh Academy: -£320,948
